Film Processing

C41 Color Negative

Black and White

E6 Color Positive

Most labs use ‘minilab’ machines, which are abundant and fast ways to process color negative or B&W film. Northeast Photographic however uses only professional grade processing equipment from Colex and Jobo. These processors have fully integrated archival wash and stabilization stages to ensure the best longevity possible from your film. We process C41 using Fujifilm chemistry. B&W film is developed in replenished Xtol, which is in our opinion the finest developer ever created (and we’ve tried most, including exotic Pyro based soups). E6 is processed using one shot chemistry in our Jobo ATL2500, which is always mixed just prior to processing. All large format film is processed using Jobo EXPERT drums, which in our experience are superior to even dip and dunk for consistency.

Scanning

We use several scanners to offer different services and quality levels. Our main scanners are the Fuji Frontier SP3000 and Noritsu HS1800. For higher resolution and more format options, we also use the Creo Eversmart Supreme II and Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED. Additionally, we have a Fujifilm GFX100 medium format scanner that can create extremely detailed 400-megapixel scans.

Fuji Frontier

Known for its distinctive color palette, the Frontier series of scanners are famous for their snappy contrast and beautiful tonal scale, particularly with color negative film. Over time, lab owners and techs have added the capability of over-scanning frames, first in 135 and now in 120.

Additionally, the Frontier allows for 3 scan modes. Standard with a slight crop. Full borders with some of the black film edge included, and full borders XL, which scans the full piece of film edge to edge.

We’re also excited to finally launch our Full Borders service for 120 film. Medium format, just the way you’d print it in a darkroom.

Noritsu HS1800

Known for its high resolution, color accuracy, and flexibility, the Noritsu HS1800 is an incredible tool and compliment to the Fuji Frontier scanners. We scan anything from 35mm to 6x17 panoramas with our Noritsu. Clients who prefer it like the high resolution, greater contrast control, and more flexible files.

Most of our 120 film is scanned on the Noritsu HS1800, a high resolution lab scanner prized for its sharp detail, smooth tonal rendering, and speed. It handles both color and black & white film with consistency and subtlety, making it ideal for everyday work and professional use alike.

Frontier Scan

Frontier vs Noritsu?

Both scanners produce beautiful scans! The Frontier is noticeably more contrasty, and will blow out highlights more easily. The Noritsu is far more color accurate, but many prefer the Frontier’s distinctive look. The Frontier can do overscans (seen here), the Noritsu is generally higher resolution. There is no wrong choice, just preference.
